Gold-Plated vs. Gold Vermeil vs. Gold Filled: What's the Difference?

With the price of gold remaining historically high, many of you are asking the same question: How can I enjoy the look of gold without the price tag of solid-gold?

That's where gold-enhanced jewellery comes in. Options like gold-plated, gold vermeil, and gold-filled jewellery make gold more accessible while still offering beauty, style, and quality - when chosen and cared for properly.

Let's break down the differences so you can shop confidently.

Gold-Plated Jewellery

Gold-plated jewellery has a very thin layer, often 0.5-1.0 microns, of gold applied over the base jewellery. In many cases, that base metal is brass or stainless steel. Here, at GNM Fine Jewellers, the gold is plated over sterling silver.

Gold-plated jewellery is affordable and tends to lean into the trending looks. Making this a great option for occasional wear or fashion pieces. Because the gold layer is thin, it will wear over time, and eventually the base metal will show through the plating.

Gold Vermeil

Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a step up from standard gold plating. It features a thicker layer of gold bonded over sterling silver, rather than a base metal.

In Canada, gold vermeil is regulated by law. To legally be called gold vermeil, a piece must be electroplated with gold that is at least 10 karat gold and applied at a minimum thickness of 1.0 microns. Electroplating ensures stronger adhesion, helping the gold layer wear more evenly over time. Many of our gold vermeil pieces exceed these requirements, featuring a generous 2.5 micron layer of gold.

Thanks to this thicker gold layer and the electroplating process, gold vermeil offers greater durability and longer-lasting wear when cared for properly. It holds up well through many everyday activities, making it a popular choice for regular wear. That said, we still recommend removing gold vermeil jewellery before swimming, using hot tubs, or exercising to help preserve its beauty for as long as possible.

Gold-Filled Jewellery

Gold-filled jewellery contains the thickest gold layer of the three, mechanically bonded to a core (often brass). Although it has the highest price point, it is much more resistant to fading or showing wear and can last many years with proper care.

Bonus: What is Ion-Plating?

Ion-plating is an advanced coating process commonly used on stainless steel jewellery to create an exceptionally durable gold-coloured finish. Unlike traditional plating, ion-plating bonds the gold layer to the metal at a molecular level, resulting in a finish that is far more resistant to scratching and fading. Our stainless steel pieces feature ion-plating, making them ideal for daily wear and active lifestyles while still delivering a polished, gold-inspired look.

Caring for Gold-Enhanced Jewellery

No matter which option you choose, proper care makes all the difference!

  • Remove jewellery before showering, swimming, or exercising.

  • Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, hairspray, and household cleaners.

  • Store pieces separately in a cool, dry place, preferably in a soft pouch or jewellery box. Avoid storing in the light.

  • Clean gently with a soft cloth — no harsh cleaners or abrasives.

  • Put jewellery on after getting ready, not before.

The Takeaway

Gold-plated, gold vermeil, and gold-filled jewellery each serve a purpose, and none are "bad" choices. It simply depends on how often you will wear the piece, your budget, and your lifestyle.

With gold prices remaining high, these options allow you to enjoy gold's beauty while being fashionable and budget-conscious.
